something to help you. You have perhaps never seen God as a Friend? Maybe you even use his name as an expletive sometimes? But He still loves you and wants to help with your weakness. Grace is the opposite of your weakness. If you are weak you will receive power and strength; if you are afraid, then courage; if you are guilty, He will accept you with love and forgiveness (no matter how bad your life has been). God is just waiting to step in and help, but we keep trying without Him - and keep failing too. |

You are invited to come 'boldly'. God does not put you on probation first to see if you could do better for yourself. He asks you to come just as you are, all out of control and in a mess. He tells you to hold your head up and just ask for what you need. He will add to your weak will all the power that He has, so that you can actually do the good thing that you have chosen to do. You will not be let down, except as you waver from the your decision. He cannot help if you are not really sure if you want to be different and better.
If you can accept this special invitation, you will be a long way on the road towards real health and a full life.
TEMPERANCE—an older word for ‘self control’. Here is a definition.
With the help of God, total abstinence from things that are harmful and moderation and appropriateness in things that are good. |
REFLECTION
These pages have talked about the desire to be better that God has put inside us, it has talked about conscience, the voice of God in us. Whether we like it or not, we are not our own people. God continues to intervene in our lives. After Adam and Eve sinned God made a way for the human race to become once again what He originally planned. The devil had kidnapped us into his control, and would finally tire of us and destroy us. Jesus, who is God, came to this earth to live with us and in his early thirties, died for us to pay the ransom. He gives us everything we have, our life, our breath, our mind, even our daily food and drink.

We cannot create life, we cannot feed ourselves, we cannot help ourselves, we cannot change ourselves. And yet proudly we think we are living for ourselves. In spite of our rebellious attitude He continues to call to us to walk free, to walk with Him away from those cravings and addictions and from the sins that our conscience tells us about. By our choice and His power we can be free. We do not have to be slaves any more. We do not have to fail again. |

He has been here, He has done it. He knows exactly how to help us with our lack of self control; and self control or ‘temperance’ really is the key to life and health. 'Abstinence from that which is harmful, and moderation in that which is good' but only with the help of God as it was in the beginning. We need God to overcome health habits, we need God to overcome sins. We need God for lasting cheerful self control.
Jesus said, “BE OF GOOD CHEER, FOR I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.” John 16:33. |
