What do the B Vitamins do for us?

We need only minute quantities of the B vitamins. They affect all the cells in our bodies but it is in our nervous systems that we can often see the results of any deficiency.
An experiment was carried out with 3 groups of chickens. One group was fed with white flour, another with enriched white flour and another with 100% wholemeal flour. In five days the chickens on white flour began to die. The other two groups both grew well and filled out with good feathers. But then gradually differences began to be seen. The group on the enriched flour had a more high pitched chirp, they were more untidy in their cage and walked in the flour and then in the water and made 'boots' on their feet. With the slightest noise they ran to one corner of their cage chittering together.
Their general behaviour was highly strung and nervous often pecking at each other. The group on wholemeal flour, however, was much more balanced and relaxed about life.
It has been shown that when we also have foods rich in the B Vitamins we become more calm, cheerful and orderly. We are not so jumpy and erratic, or frightened by the unexpected. This change is particularly noticeable in children who become quieter and easier to manage.
So what foods give us the B Vitamins? It is found in alfalfa sprouts, wheat germ, brewer's yeast, whole grain cereals, wholemeal bread, but also in dark green leafy vegetables, peas and beans, bananas, apples and nuts.
Do you often feel 'edgy'? Then additional Vitamin B in your diet may be something worth trying. They may assist your restoration to stronger health of mind and being.

A Fence or an Ambulance?

'Twas a dangerous cliff they freely confessed,
Though to walk near its edge was so pleasant.
But over its terrible crest there had slipped
A duke and full many a peasant.

So the people said something would have to be done
But their projects did not at all tally.
Some said, 'Put a fence round the edge of the cliff.'
Some, 'An ambulance down in the valley.'

So the people gave pounds.
It seemed like more sense,
Not for to put up a fence,
But for an ambulance down in the valley.

Then an old sage remarked, 'It's a marvel to me,
That people give far more attention
To repairing results, than to stopping the cause,
When they'd much better aim at prevention.
